Which phones have them right now?
Availability is the thing most sites get wrong, because they publish the list without the delivery dates. This is the honest state of play on 2026-10-22. We re-check after every OS release.
| Platform | Emoji 17.0 | Emoji 18.0 | Notes |

| X / web | Yes | Depends | Most sites render with the device font; some substitute Twemoji. |
Why new emoji show up as boxes
An emoji is not a picture. It is a character — the same kind of thing as the letter "A". Unicode decides which characters exist; Apple, Google, Samsung and Microsoft each decide what it looks like and when you get it.
1. Approved
Unicode says the character exists. Done for Emoji 18.0 on 16 September 2026. Copying already works everywhere.
2. Drawn
A vendor publishes artwork. Google did this in September 2026; Apple and Samsung are still working through their cycles.
3. Delivered
The artwork reaches your device — often months later, because phones update on carrier and region schedules.
The next batch: Emoji 19.0
The draft list for the 2027 release is expected around January 2027, with the final vote in September 2027. The draft usually loses a candidate or two: in this cycle Apple Core was cut, and Face With Squinting Eyes was replaced by Cracking Face.
Questions people actually ask
What are the new emoji for 2026?
Unicode 18.0, released on 16 September 2026, added nine emoji: cracking face, leftwards thumb sign, rightwards thumb sign, monarch butterfly, pickle, lighthouse, meteor, eraser and net with handle. Unicode 17.0 added eight more in September 2025, so 17 new emoji are available now.
Why can't I see the new emoji on my phone?
Emoji are characters, not pictures. Unicode standardises the character, but Apple, Google, Samsung and Microsoft each draw their own artwork on their own schedule. Until your vendor ships it, your device shows an empty box. Nothing is broken — it is simply out of date.
When will the new emoji arrive on iPhone?
Apple added Emoji 17.0 in iOS 26.4 in March 2026. Emoji 18.0 is expected in a later iOS point release — Apple has consistently shipped new emoji in spring updates rather than at launch.
Can I copy a new emoji my phone can't display?
Yes. Copying puts the character on your clipboard as text. It pastes anywhere and renders as soon as the receiving app and device support it.
Do the new emoji already have meanings?
Not officially — meanings come from usage, not from Unicode. In practice cracking face reads as "I'm barely holding it together", pickle as pickleball or "in a pickle", and the sideways thumbs as a shrug.
